CHENNAI: After hovering around the normal of 33 degrees celsius for a while, the maximum temperature in the city on Friday afternoon soared to 36.1 degrees celsius, around two degrees more than on Thursday. Along with the 36.1 degrees celsius recorded at the airport weather station in Meenambakkam, it was the highest recorded so far this month.
"It has become unbearable to wait at traffic signals in the afternoons. Even the nights are becoming hotter. It is so warm in the beach late in the evening," said H Sridhar, a commuter.
Met department officials say it will be some time before there is a constant increase in the temperature. "On Wednesday, the maximum temperature was only around 32 degrees, but it went up by 2 degrees on Thursday. It is possible the temperature will drop once again," said Y E A Raj, deputy director general of India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chennai.
On Friday last, the maximum temperatute touched 35 degrees celsius , but dropped to 34 degrees C and then to 33 degrees C during the next couple of days, according to data from the weather department.
The increase in the temperature on Friday was due to clear skies and weaker wind speed, said Raj. "We will continue to have varying temperatures for some time and we'll have moderate weather till mid-April. Only from the last week of April will the temperature start going up continuously," he said.
With the ocean advantage, the city will continue to have a maximum temperature that is two or three degrees lesser than in the interior areas of the state. While the maximum temperature in districts such as Salem and Trichy touched 38.5 degrees C and 38.6 degrees C on Friday, in Vellore it was was 39 degrees celsius.
